Guillermo Cienfuegos is the directing pseudonym of actor Alex Fernandez. Under both names, he has had an extensive 30 year career as a director and actor in theatre, television, feature films and VoiceOver.
As a theatre director, Guillermo Cienfuegos has been featured in numerous periodicals including the “Roll Call: People to Watch” issue of American Theater Magazine and the Los Angeles Times.
On stage, Cienfuegos most recently directed the Los Angeles premiere of Will Arbery’s Pulitzer Prize finalist Heroes of the Fourth Turning at Rogue Machine, where he serves as Artistic Director, and Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing at A Noise Within. Both productions were included in the Los Angeles Times Top 9 Best productions of 2023.
Previous credits include the World Premiere of Juan José Alfonso’s Middle of the World at Boise Contemporary Theatre, which will transfer to Rogue Machine in January 2024. Also at Rogue Machine, he directed the World Premiere of Tim Venable’s The Beautiful People, the World Premiere of Neil McGowan’s Disposable Necessities (Ovation nomination for Best Playwriting) and the Los Angeles premiere of Greg Keller’s Dutch Masters (Ovation Nomination for Best Production, Stage Raw Award Winner for Best Two Person Performance). In addition, he directed the Los Angeles premiere of Stephen Adly Guirgis’ Pulitzer Prize winning Between Riverside and Crazy at the Fountain Theatre (7 Ovation Award Nominations including Best Director and Best Production) and Christmas Contigo at the Oregon Cabaret Theatre.
Cienfuegos won both the Ovation and Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards for Best Director for his production of Shakespeare’s Henry V at Pacific Resident Theatre. Other credits at PRT include Ionesco’s Rhinoceros (9 Stage Raw nominations including Best Director and Production of the Year), Pinter’s The Homecoming (4 Broadway World Awards, including Best Director and Best Play) and the world premiere of Safe at Home: An Evening with Orson Bean (LADCC Award for Best Solo Show, L.A. Times ‘Best of 2016’).
On camera, he has directed several projects, including the single camera comedy pilot Boned, the multiple award-winning short film The Pear (Best Thriller at California Indies Festival, Award of Excellence at Best Shorts Competition), the feature-length music documentary PopCanon: Man, We Loved To Rock, and the Rogue Machine 3 episode narrative/documentary hybrid mini-series Voices of the New Belarus.
As an actor on camera, Alex Fernandez has amassed over 170 film, television and voiceover credits on the IMDb. He most recently starred as Eduard Panish on the Showtime series American Gigolo, the Hulu film The Valet and recurred on the FX series Mayans MC, the Freeform series Good Trouble and the Paramount series Seal Team. In addition, he has Starred or Guest-Starred on over 100 other TV series and pilots, including Westworld, True Lies, Big Sky, Bosch, Grey’s Anatomy, Marvel’s Runaways, Lucifer, True Detective, Killer Women, Devious Maids, House, Prison Break, Without A Trace and The West Wing.
As a voiceover artist, he has worked on several dozen animated projects and video games, including Family Guy, American Dad, Princess Mononoke, Far Cry 6 ,The Walking Dead, Call of Duty and Final Fantasy X. On stage, he has performed at numerous U.S. regional theaters, including The Old Globe, American Conservatory Theatre, San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, California Theatre Center, Alaska Repertory Theatre, Pacific Resident Theatre and Rogue Machine.
He recently served as a faculty member at the USC School of Dramatic Arts and is a graduate of the American Conservatory Theatre.
